Recently we saw that how the social media giant Facebook took major steps for the false reports circulating in their social network because of the large wave of these reports that have been plaguing both Facebook and other social networks. Thus, in addition to Facebook, a group of researchers has decided to take control over this kind of news.
Hoaxy is a fake news tracker, a team of researchers from the University of Indiana -EEUU- has developed an open program whose aim is to find the false news that surfing the Internet. The system employs many web crawlers to detect links to articles posted on fake news sites. Then, through a Social Media Application Programming Interface (API), Hoaxy checks how these false news spread across networks.
Rumors, fake news and conspiracy theories are Hoaxy’s main goals, but the service also offers results on news manipulations on a reality basis.
Its operation is very simple since the user only has to write in the platform searcher the subject that interests him and the service will return a list with all the false news that have been published on the subject.
After the search, the platform also offers a study through two graphs in which we can observe the impact that this news had on social networks, how many times it has been shared and when and in which social network in particular.
The problem of the truthfulness of news is more serious than we think. Hence, Hoaxy is currently in a trial version that gets results from 132 different web pages, all known for publishing fake news.
The dissemination of such news is quite serious that has alerted agencies such as the World Economic Forum have included the digital misinformation as one of the risks of the future with the water crisis or lack of Adaptation of climate change.
The researchers have been working for some months with the information gathered by the platform. The preliminary analysis of the data obtained on the traffic of news in social networks ensures that the dissemination of false news is dominated by very active users while the news that deny the Hoax takes 10 to 20 hours more to be shared by the users.
However, these studies are currently in the preliminary phase and researchers intend to publish the final results at the 25th International Conference on the World Wide Web (WWW) taking place in April next year (2017) in Canada.
